Leadership vs. Management

There is a longstanding and necessary debate in both the academic and business worlds regarding the distinction between Leadership and Management. While corporate titles often default to the term ‘manager’ for anyone in a supervisory role, here at LMI, we believe it is crucial to distinguish between the title and the activity. We must acknowledge that while Leaders certainly have management responsibilities, the core of their function is different.

Our philosophy on this topic is straightforward: You Lead People, and you Manage Things.

The ‘things’ in a business are the tangible and logistical elements: assets, financial resources, systems, operational workflows, and project timelines. These elements require organisation, control, and optimisation. In our experience, Effective Leaders are almost always proficient at managing these things; they understand that a vision cannot be achieved without a solid operational foundation.

However, the reverse is not always true. Highly Effective Managers often struggle to become Effective Leaders. This disconnect usually occurs because they devote a disproportionate amount of focus to the ‘things’ – the processes and metrics – rather than the individuals executing them.

This is the precise point where leadership roles begin to underachieve or fail. A manager encounters trouble when they lose sight of the fact that human beings are not machines, systems, or line items on a spreadsheet. People possess complex thoughts, emotions, and motivations. Consequently, they can no longer be ‘managed’ as if they were inanimate objects; Organisations need Leadership!

Total Leader Concept

The total leader concept was developed in large measure to fill a leadership void in the global market place. As the world of business has changed and evolved through increased global competition, constant innovation, lightning fast communication capabilities and ever-changing technologies, the need for effective and high-performance leaders has skyrocketed. In order for businesses to become truly empowered, productive and innovative enterprises they must develop leaders throughout the entire organisation.

In fact the organisation of the future is an organisation where everyone is a leader. It is only when people are able to lead themselves that they are actually empowered to be creative and innovative … and to achieve the highest level of performance. This means leadership abilities must be developed in every team member. This is the very foundation of the total leader concept.
